Phlebotomy instructors are hired by vocational training institutions and community colleges to teach all levels of courses assigned within the Medical Laboratory Technology and Phlebotomy curriculum. Their daily routine involves theoretic and practical supervision of phlebotomy students in a classroom, lab, and/or various other clinical environments. They are expected to develop their own teaching materials, activities, and handouts for each course and deliver lectures and lab practicals to students. They must participate in assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of activities and sometimes must teach online or hybrid courses to improve the instructional quality of their phlebotomy program.
Most training institutions require that their instructors maintain professional certification and partake in workshops and/or continuing education programs to earn a certain amount of annual CEUs. They must keep abreast with new technologies and latest industry specific skills and developments in their field. Last but not least they must be sensitive to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, learning styles and disabilities of their students and staff. Their annual salary typically ranges between $36,000 - $40,000 (based on education level and work experience).
