Phlebotomy is a Specialty Skill on which the Community depends
Many cities and communities rely heavily on health and medical services. Certificates and diplomas in phlebotomy
procedures can be extremely valuable to fill the need and secure the jobs this creates. The largest employers in
the medical and health care industry who recruite skilled phlebotomy staff are medical offices, ambulatory health
clinics, regional medical centers, general and specialty hospitals, emergency medical centers and research
labs.
Phlebotomist Training Workshops
Enrolling in a phlebotomy workshop can certainly get you on your
way to a new career path fast.
The minimum requirement to become a phlebotomist in the United States of America is
a high school diploma, with the exception of phlebotomists in California.
Those wishing to practice this skill in California specifically need to become
California certified and must have had approved phlebotomy training.
Phlebotomy Workshop Goals
We know of phlebotomy workshops at a designated training facility, often held by the American Red Cross, or
other providers, where participants are taught venipuncture and blood collection skills in as little as 2-3 days.
Instead of requiring months of training, these workshops provide the knowledge and skills to become proficient
enough for an entry-level phlebotomist position. The only back draw is that there is very little time to build up
confidence.
Outcome
Most of the workshops provide participants with the opportunity to do at least one live stick on a real
person while learning. There's nothing better than having hands-on training, but gaining confidence is a matter of
practice and time. Upon course completion participants usually receive a certificate of completion for phlebotomy
and, depending on the workshop curriculum and duration of the course, may qualify them to sit for a
phlebotomy certification exam.
Contact your local Red Cross chapter and local community colleges for more information on their programs,
requirements, learning objectives, and upcoming workshops.
